Petteri Mäkiniemi

Petteri Mäkiniemi (b. 1982) operates in the regions between music, technology and art. He plays and creates music on a Ginette, an instrument of his own construction based on an early French electric Ondes Martenot. It is a highly expressive instrument drawing on the player’s sensitive touch as in an acoustic instrument. The player controls the pitch with the right hand by moving a ring laterally along the tactile fingerboard while the left hand presses the intensity key and controls the volume. Petteri is right now developing a novel polyphonic version of the Ginette with a grant from the Kone Foundation.

In addition to Cellomania, Petteri gives solo performances on the Ginette, plays in Tuomas Ahva’s experimental electronic music ensemble Ahva and in works by dancer Emmi Pennanen. His main day-to-day job is with Knif Audio, maker of professional audio equipment and synthesisers. He holds an MA in Sound in New Media from Aalto University and an MSc in electronics from the University of Oulu.
